Course Goals and Outcomes

Facilities Maintenance HVAC Course 1 is a great option for those looking for foundational positions in the heating and cooling Industry or Facilities Maintenance. Those who complete this course will be US/EPA Section 608 certified and may perform foundational jobs such as a HVAC/R or Facilities Maintenance technician.

How It Works

This 24-week (6 month) course is a 480 hour training program that is broken down into 50 percent classroom instruction time and 50 percent hands-on learning experiences. Students who participate in this course receive grades based on individual and group projects and attendance. This course will aid in the preparation for the participant’s US/EPA and R410A certification tests and provides greater opportunities for future employment.

Course Overview

This program focuses on key areas and principles of HVAC, electrical and plumbing: residential and light commercial electrical and refrigeration system operation and troubleshooting, climate control systems, residential and light commercial plumbing, solar panel installation and a basic overview of system applications. We break this course down into six sections.

101: Electrical and Solar Applications

This section will cover the following: safety, tools and soft skills, electrical and meters, solar system integration and codes, solar operations and solar panel installation.

102: Refrigeration Practices, Brazing, EPA and 410A

This section will cover the following: refrigeration, heat transfer, thermal law, superheat, subcooling, brazing, recovery, vacuum, charging, review for the EPA test and EPA testing.

103: Wiring Diagrams and Troubleshooting

This section will cover the following: electrical motors, loads and controls, wiring diagrams, ladder and pictorial troubleshooting.

104: Gas and Electric Heating

This section will cover the following: UPC code, safety, sizing and operation, flue, combustion air, gas, basic heating operation, controls and safeties, wiring diagrams and troubleshooting, and water heater operation.

105: Residential and Light Commercial Electrical

This section will cover the following: facility electrical safety, facility electrical and NEC code (article 200).
